Al-Bidyah is a small and interesting village located around 35 kilometers north of Fujairah city. The village is an ideal place for history lovers who can learn about the archaeological finds about the area. Al-Bidya is also highly famous because of Al-Bidyah Mosque which is the oldest mosque in UAE.

Al Bidyah Mosque with its unusual architecture and mysterious origins is the most famous attraction in Al-Bidyah Village. The mosque is named after the town that surrounds it and is the oldest surviving mosque in UAE. It is estimated that the mosque was built somewhere in 1446 but nobody could determine who built it. The mosque is built with mud and bricks and has fewer domes than other mosques in the country. The mosque is now equipped with modern lighting and air-conditioning but still beautifully maintained in its original condition from the past. A central pillar divides the internal space into four equal squares with similar dimensions. Inside, it has a prayer hall which is decorated with arches and mihrab. Mihrab is the prayer niche that points to the direction of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The area around the mosque is also very interesting and has many ancient graves that are called Al-Bidya Tombs. These tombs are considered to be from the 2nd millennium BC according to the archaeologists. There are also remains of a Portuguese fort near the mosque which were discovered by a team of Australian archaeologists.

Fujairah Fort is considered as the oldest fort in United Arab Emirates and has served as both the resident of the ruling family and the defense for the city. This was the only stone structure along the coastline of Fujairah for many centuries since 1670. The fort was attacked by the British in the early 20th century and was badly damaged.

The fort has been restored and has three major sections, two round towers, one square tower and several halls. A Heritage Village has been setup around the fort by the Fujairah Department of Archaeology and Heritage. This fort and the heritage village are great sites to visit and learn about the history and old culture of Fujairah and the Falaj water irrigation system that was used by the ancient farmers in UAE.

Awhlah Fort is located in the Awhlah village which is located around 30 kilometers from the Fujairah city.

The walls of the fort are thick and high and can be seen from a distance as it is located on a hillside which was an ideal location to protect the countryside of Fujairah. The circular watch tower of the fort is 20 meters high with narrow windows which were used by the archers. You can climb up to have great views from these windows.
