Nan Lian Garden is a spectacular garden in Hong Kong which is beautifully crafted in the Tang Dynasty style with amazing architecture, hills, trees, water ponds, and wooden structures. All the structure including rocks and trees are placed according to the rules of a Jiangshouju garden in the Tang Dynasty. Located in the Diamond Hill area, Nan Lian Garden occupies 3.5 hectares of land. The garden has a beautiful backdrop of Hong Kong’s famous high-rise buildings which provides a wonderful contrast between the busy life of Hong Kong and this Oasis of Calmness.
Nan Lian Garden is located adjacent to the Chi Lin Nunnery, which is also a wonderful attraction in Hong Kong. The garden is a public park which is considered ideal for photographers because of its design which has a one-way circular route surrounded by splendid architecture. Just follow the path and you will see all the major attractions of the garden within an hour. You can spend as much time as you like because the garden has such a wonderful atmosphere of peace and tranquility that one wants to relax here for a longer time. There are more than 60 species of plants in the garden with two water ponds.
The construction of Nan Lian Garden started in 2003 and it was opened for public in November 2006. Visiting the garden is free and the opening timings are from 7 am to 9 pm every day. The park is a no-smoking zone and you are not allowed to bring animals or pets with you without a prior permission. While visiting the garden, you should be modestly dressed and should not bring any food or drinks except water. There is a vegetarian food restaurant, a Chinese tea house, a souvenir shop, and a multi-purpose hall inside the garden.
How to Reach Nan Lian Garden
You can take MTR and get off at the Diamond Hill Station and exit from the C2. You will find the signs that will take you to the gardens after a short walk. There are also plenty of bus routes that can get you there, the bus routes are 3B, 10, 11, 11C, 38, 42C, 61X, 62X, 70X, 74A, 74X, 75X, 80, 82X, 84M, 85C, 85M, 89, 89B, 89C, 91, 91M, 92, 258D, 259D, 286M, 671, 796B, NR906, E22 or E22A. Amazing Attractions at Nan Lian Garden
If you follow the set path, you will see the Chinese Timber Architecture Gallery, Pine Path, Two beautiful water ponds (The Blue Pond and the Lotus Pond), a lot of trees and the magnificent Pavilion of Absolute Perfection over the Lotus Pond. You will also see a lovely water wheel near the vegetarian restaurant. In short, as you walk the path, the beautiful scenery will keep changing with spectacular displays of trees, Bonsai, Rocks and Mineral displays.
Chinese Timber Architecture Gallery
As the name suggests this architecture gallery displays the scaled modes of Tang Dynasty including Liao and Jin Dynasty structures. There is a lot of hard work behind the creation of these models where every tiny bit of detail has been crafted with perfection. Photography is not allowed in the Chinese Timber Architecture Gallery.
Banyan Grove at Nan Lian Garden
After the architecture gallery you will walk towards the Banyan Grove where you can find some good shade and can relax as well. After this, most of the area of the Nan Lian Garden is under sun. Baynan Grove has amazing trees and plants condensed to form a beautiful relaxation place for families and individuals.
Pavilon of Absolute Perfection
The name already depicts that this attraction of the garden must be something very special, and it is. This is the major highlight of the park and most of the wonderful pictures of Nan Lian Garden have Pavilion of Absolute Perfection in it. The golden structure is beautifully set within a serene Lotus Pond that is very eye catching and attracts a lot of photographers.
Xiang Hai Xuan
This is the multipurpose hall in the garden that also hosts some temporary exhibitions about plants, flowers, pottery, and architecture. Please check about the information of the exhibitions and ticket pricing before you go as you might find something very interesting going on.
The Blue Pond at Nan Lian Garden
After the Xiang Hai Xuan, you will reach the Blue Pond via the Lunar Reflection Terrace. This terrace is also a wonderful structure which allows you to enjoy beautiful views of the pond and the surroundings. Visitors spend a lot of time near the Blue Pond as it is large and has some magnificent views around it.
The Rockery at Nan Lian Garden
Nan Lian Garden has a section dedicated to the display of rocks. These beautiful and large shiny rocks are perfectly placed inside the display area. Some of the rocks are around 260 million years old which were excavated from the Red River in Guangxi Province, China.
