Pulitzer prize winners
The Pulitzer prize winners are chosen in United States every year for their exceptional work in newspaper, magazine, musical composition, online journalism and literature. The Pulitzer Prize was established around 100 years ago in the will of American news publisher Joseph Pulitzer. Colombia University in New York received a sum of 2,000,000 to establish a school of journalism and to award prizes. The purpose of the prize is to reward and promote excellence in 21 categories. The winner of Public service category of the journalism is awarded with a Gold medal and rest of the 20 are awarded with 15,000 USD each.
Joseph Pulitzer initially nominated less categories but allowed the Pulitzer Prize Board of Advisories to make necessary changes and to create more categories. That is why the awards and categories remained intact, updated and relevant to the time.
Today many potential and published writers dream of receiving this highly prestigious award someday. In April of each year, nominees are announced and after a month the prizes are awarded. The ceremony takes place at a Luncheon at Low Memorial Library on the campus of Columbia university.
To enter in the prize contest the submitted works have to pay $75 as an entry fee and must be very specific to its chosen category. The maximum categories allowed for one work are 2. Each Year 102 jurors are selected to serve for the 21 award categories in 20 separate juries. The jury announces three nominees for each category. The winners are selected by majority votes. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for the prizes in books, drama and music. Self-published books are also eligible only if they are published in hardcover or paperback format.
If the competitors in a category fail to gain the majority votes of the Pulitzer Prize Board, the prize or prizes can be withheld in a given year.
